Preparing Your Home for a New Kitten
Bringing home a new kitten is an exciting milestone, but a little preparation goes a long way in making the transition smooth for both you and your new companion. Whether you're getting a Bengal, Maine Coon, Ragdoll, or any other breed, your setup decisions should account for the breed's adult size and activity level.
Start with the essentials: a sturdy litter box appropriately sized for your breed (large breeds like Maine Coons and Ragdolls need bigger boxes), high-quality kitten food recommended by your breeder, stainless steel or ceramic food and water bowls, and a comfortable carrier for the trip home and future vet visits. Invest in a solid cat tree — look for models with wide, stable bases, especially if you're bringing home a larger breed. Active breeds like Bengals and Savannahs will also benefit from climbing shelves and interactive toys.
Kitten-proofing your home is similar to baby-proofing but with a feline twist. Secure loose electrical cords, remove or relocate toxic plants (lilies, poinsettias, and philodendrons are especially dangerous), and make sure small objects that could be swallowed are out of reach. Kittens are notoriously curious and dexterous — they can open cabinet doors, turn on faucets, and get into spaces you wouldn't expect. Consider child-safety latches on cabinets that contain cleaning supplies or medications.
Set up a quiet "safe room" where your kitten can spend their first few days adjusting to their new environment. This should include their litter box, food, water, a cozy bed, and a few toys. Gradually expand their access to the rest of your home as they grow more confident. This controlled introduction reduces stress and helps your kitten feel secure from day one, building a foundation of trust that will last their lifetime.
